iRobot Roomba Error 6 — What It Means & How to Fix It
Roomba Error 6 on a j Series means the cliff sensors are constantly reporting a drop-off, either because the robot is at an edge or the sensors are dirty.
What this code means
The robot says "Drop off detected. Move to a new area, and then press the button." iRobot's cause is "Constant cliff detected", with the advice to check that the cliff sensors are clear of debris. Those sensors look down at the floor from the underside of the robot to stop it driving off stairs.
This matches iRobot's error chart for the Roomba j Series and Roomba Combo 10 Max. iRobot publishes a separate chart for each Roomba series (600, 800, 900, e, i, s), and the same number can carry a different meaning there, so use the chart for your robot.
Most likely causes
| Cause | How likely | DIY-fixable? |
|---|---|---|
| Dust or debris covering the cliff sensor windows | Very common | Yes — dry cloth |
| Robot stopped at a stair edge or ledge | Common | Yes — no tools |
| Very dark flooring being read as a drop | Occasional | Partly — move the robot |
What you can try yourself
- Carry the robot to a different, flat area away from stairs.
- Turn it over and wipe each cliff sensor window around the underside edge with a clean, dry cloth.
- Set it down and press the button.
When to call a technician
- Error 6 appears on a plain, light floor with clean sensors.
- The robot refuses to move at all after the sensors are wiped.
Typical professional repair cost: Free. A sensor that still misreads after cleaning needs iRobot Customer Care.
Frequently asked questions
Where are the cliff sensors on a Roomba?
On the underside, spaced around the front edge. They are small windows that face the floor.
Why does my Roomba think it is at a cliff on flat floor?
Dirty sensor windows are the common reason. iRobot's chart tells you to check the cliff sensors are clear of debris.
