Miele Dryer Clean out airways light — What It Means & How to Fix It

Also shown as Clean out airways on some models.

The 'Clean out airways' light is the dryer's polite nudge that the lint filters or the plinth filter in front of the heat exchanger need a proper clean.

What this code means

The 'Clean out airways' indicator isn't an alarm — it's maintenance. Miele's page explains it lights because the lint filters are soiled, and on heat-pump models it also flags the plinth filter in front of the heat exchanger. The light goes out the way it comes on: open and close the door with the machine switched on after cleaning every filter. Leave it too long and the dryer's airflow chokes — at which point the machine graduates you to a full F66 fault.

Documented by Miele USA for tumble dryers as the 'Clean out airways' indicator light; it shares its causes with F66, and Miele prints the same cleaning procedure for both.

Most likely causes

CauseHow likelyDIY-fixable?
Lint filters overdue for cleaning Very common Yes — clean after each program
Plinth filter in front of the heat exchanger soiled Common Yes — clean and dry thoroughly
Plinth filter damaged or worn Less common Yes — replace it

What you can try yourself

  1. Switch the dryer off and unplug it before cleaning.
  2. Clean both lint filters under running water and wipe or vacuum the airflow openings.
  3. On heat-pump models, open the access panel and pull out the plinth filter, rinse it, and dry it completely before refitting.
  4. Refit everything, plug in, open and close the door with the dryer switched on — Miele says this makes the light go out.
  5. If the light returns every cycle, replace a torn or deformed plinth filter rather than just cleaning it.

When to call a technician

Typical professional repair cost: Free — it's a maintenance reminder; a replacement plinth filter is roughly $20–40.

Frequently asked questions

Does the light stay on if I ignore it?

It keeps nagging, and then the dryer upgrades the problem to an F66 breakdown with a program interruption. Ten minutes of filter cleaning now beats a technician visit later.

Why must the plinth filter be bone-dry before refitting?

Miele warns that a wet toe-kick/plinth filter can interrupt the next program with a fault message — damp blocks the airflow it's there to protect. Squeeze the water out and air-dry it.
