Samsung Refrigerator 84C — What It Means & How to Fix It

By Callum Griffin · Researched and verified against manufacturer and repair documentation · Reviewed September 2026

84C is Samsung's compressor lock code: the compressor rotor won't turn, so cooling stops. One reset is the only safe DIY step — anything recurring is a compressor, driver, or sealed-system repair.

What this code means

84C tells you the compressor — the pump that moves refrigerant — is locked: the board tried to start it and detected that the rotor isn't turning, then locked the compressor out to protect it. In most cases that ends cooling entirely, so the freezer and fridge both warm. The underlying cause is usually a failed start device, a seized compressor, a weak driver board in inverter models, or a refrigerant condition that has strained the system to the point the compressor can't restart.

Samsung lists 84C as a compressor lock condition and routes it to service: a frozen-up compressor can't be freed by the owner. Family Hub models display the same code; 85C (low input voltage) is a separate code that appears in the same family and is worth checking first, because a dipping supply can stall compressor startup.

Most likely causes

CauseHow likelyDIY-fixable?
Start relay or overload protector failed Common No — technician job
Compressor mechanically seized Common No — technician job
Inverter driver board failing to start the rotor Occasional No — technician job
Low input voltage stalling startup Less common Partly — verify the outlet

What you can try yourself

  1. Unplug the refrigerator for five minutes, plug it back in, and watch whether the compressor starts and the code clears. Once — that's the only safe DIY attempt.
  2. If 84C returns, check the basics that a technician will ask about: is the fridge on a dedicated circuit, and did a recent power event precede the code?
  3. Do not start tapping, rocking, or 'bumping' the compressor: a locked rotor on a running system can overheat and damage the sealed system further.
  4. Book a technician. They'll meter the start circuit and compressor windings, diagnose the driver on inverter models, and handle any sealed-system refrigerant work themselves.

When to call a technician

Typical professional repair cost: Start-device or driver repairs typically run $200–$450; compressor replacement is the expensive end at $400–$900 including labor.

Frequently asked questions

Can a locked compressor free itself?

Occasionally a stuck-start condition clears on its own after a full power reset, which is why one reset is worth trying. A compressor that locks repeatedly is failing mechanically and won't stay fixed by resets.

Is 84C the same as the fridge just not cooling?

It's one cause of not cooling, and the definitive one: the code names the compressor itself. It normally appears together with a fully warm fridge, not a gradual warm-up.

Why is this code technician-only here?

The compressor runs on sealed refrigerant lines carrying high pressure and, on inverter models, high-voltage three-phase-ish drive signals. Tampering with it risks burns, sealed-system damage, and invalidating the warranty — the definition of a licensed technician's job.
