The control lost a usable reading from the combined temperature-and-soil sensor in the sump, so it can no longer judge how hot or how dirty the water is — often a wiring or sensor fault, sometimes just a fouled sensor face.

What this code means

3-1 (F3 E1 on display models) means the thermistor/OWI sensor circuit has gone open or unreadable. That single component does two jobs: the thermistor tracks water temperature while the optical water indicator (OWI) measures how cloudy the water is, letting the machine decide when the dishes are clean. With no trustworthy signal, the control raises the fault rather than guess at cycle length.

A closely related code, 3-2, reports the same sensor as electrically shorted rather than open — same part, opposite failure. On light-only models, count three flashes, a pause, then one to be sure you are reading 3-1 and not 1-3.
