Whirlpool Dishwasher 5-1 — What It Means & How to Fix It

Also shown as F5 E1 on some models.

The control did not sense the door latched when the cycle tried to begin — frequently because the door was not pushed shut within a few seconds of pressing Start, and sometimes because the latch or its switches have worn out.

What this code means

5-1 (F5 E1 on display models) is the door-not-detected code. Newer models give you about four seconds after pressing Start/Resume to close and latch the door; miss that window and the cycle will not begin. If timing is not the issue, the door latch assembly or its switches — which tell the control the door is safely shut — are the next suspects.

This is distinct from 5-2, where the control did not see the door open between cycles. Same door hardware, opposite complaint. Light-only models flash five, pause, one.

Most likely causes

CauseHow likelyDIY-fixable?
Door not pushed fully shut within four seconds of pressing Start Very common Yes — no tools
A tall item or a rack not pushed in stopping the door latching Common Yes — reload
Worn or misaligned door latch assembly Occasional Partly — inspect
Failed door switch Occasional No — technician job

What you can try yourself

  1. Press Start, then push the door firmly closed within about four seconds and listen for the latch to click — a surprising share of 5-1s are simply a slow close.
  2. Open the door and check that nothing blocks it: a tall pot on the bottom rack, a handle poking up from the top, or a rack not pushed fully home.
  3. Look at the latch and strike plate for bent metal or debris, and confirm the door shuts square rather than dropping or rubbing on one side.
  4. Cut power at the breaker for two minutes to clear a one-off sensing glitch, then try a cycle again.
  5. If the door is closing fully and on time but 5-1 stays, the latch assembly or its switches have likely failed — a technician's replacement.

When to call a technician

Typical professional repair cost: Door latch assembly replacement typically runs $120–$220 including labor.

Frequently asked questions

Why won't my Whirlpool dishwasher start since this code?

5-1 disables the cycle because the control will not run with the door reported open. Most often it is a timing miss — press Start and shut the door within about four seconds. If that does not do it, the latch switches that confirm the door is closed may have failed.

Is there really a four-second window to close the door?

On many newer Whirlpool models, yes. Pressing Start arms the cycle, and the control expects the door latched within a few seconds. It is an easy habit to break by walking away mid-press — close the door first, or close it right after pressing Start.

Can I keep using the dishwasher with a 5-1 code?

Only if it is a timing issue you can work around by closing the door promptly. If the latch hardware has actually failed, the machine will not run at all until it is repaired — the door switch is a safety interlock, not an optional sensor.
