Also shown as Clean Light Blinking, Blinking Clean Light on some models.

A flashing Clean light on a Whirlpool dishwasher is usually an error code: count the first set of flashes for the F number, wait for the short pause, then count the second set for the E number.

What this code means

Whirlpool says its dishwashers use a two-part flashing sequence. The first set of rapid flashes is the Function (F) number; after a pause of a second or two, the second set is the Error (E) number; a longer pause of about 5 seconds follows before it repeats. Seven flashes, pause, one flash is F7-E1. A Clean light that is simply on, not blinking, at the end of a cycle is normal.

Applies to Whirlpool dishwashers without a digit display. On portable models Whirlpool also asks you to check the overfill float, the water supply and for suds.

Most likely causes

CauseHow likelyDIY-fixable?
An F#E# fault being reported by blink count Very common Yes — read the code
Water supply off, or overfill float stuck (portable models) Common Yes — no tools
Suds in the tub Occasional Yes — clear suds

What you can try yourself

  1. Watch a full repeat: count the first group of flashes (F), then the second group (E).
  2. Look up that pair — 6 then 4 is F6E4, shown on this site as 6-4.
  3. On a portable model, press the overfill float down to free it and make sure the water supply is on.
  4. Check for foam in the tub and clear it if present.
  5. If you cannot match the code, reset power for 30 seconds and count again.

When to call a technician

Typical professional repair cost: Reading the code is free; the repair depends on which code it is.

Frequently asked questions

Why is the Clean light blinking on my Whirlpool dishwasher?

It is usually communicating an error code as two groups of flashes.

How do I read the blink code?

First group of flashes is the F number, short pause, second group is the E number, then a longer pause before it repeats.

Is a steady Clean light a problem?

No. It normally stays on at the end of a cycle until the door is opened and closed or Cancel is pressed.
