Whirlpool Refrigerator Replace Filter — What It Means & How to Fix It
Also shown as H2O, Water Filter on some models.
Replace Filter means the water filter has passed its rated volume or been in for 6 months — install a new filter, then reset the status light, which does not reset by itself.
What this code means
Whirlpool says the Replace Filter icon lights and blinks during dispensing when the rated volume of water has passed through the filter or 6 months have passed since it was installed. After 14 days at that stage the icons glow constantly and a chime sounds three times after dispensing. The status must be reset by hand after changing the filter.
The reset buttons vary: Freezer and Drawer/Pantry for 3 seconds on some models, LIGHT and ICE TYPE on others. Check your owner's manual.
Most likely causes
| Cause | How likely | DIY-fixable? |
|---|---|---|
| Six months since the filter was installed | Very common | Yes — replace filter |
| Rated water volume used | Common | Yes — replace filter |
| Filter replaced but status never reset | Common | Yes — reset |
What you can try yourself
- Fit a new water filter of the correct type for your model.
- Reset the status: press and hold the Freezer and Drawer/Pantry buttons for 3 seconds, or LIGHT and ICE TYPE for 3 seconds, depending on model.
- Check the Replace Filter icon turns off.
- If you cannot replace a clogged filter straight away, Whirlpool says you can leave it out so the system runs in bypass mode, unfiltered.
When to call a technician
- The light will not reset using the manual's method.
- Water flow is still poor with a new filter.
- Water leaks at the filter housing.
Typical professional repair cost: A replacement filter typically costs $40–$60.
