Electrolux Washer E21 — What It Means & How to Fix It

By Callum Griffin · Researched and verified against manufacturer and repair documentation · Reviewed September 2026

E21 appears when the pump-out phase runs longer than the washer allows; water is still leaving the tub, just not fast enough.

What this code means

E21 means the washer's pump-out phase ran longer than the allowed time — water is still draining, just slower than the machine expects. Electrolux's own troubleshooting starts with the drain hose.

Applies to Electrolux front-load washers (EFL/ELFW and EIFLW series); drain problems in this family can display as E21 (slow) rather than a total-blockage code.

Most likely causes

CauseHow likelyDIY-fixable?
Drain hose kinked or pinched Common Yes — straighten it
Drain pump filter blocked with lint, coins or small items Common Yes — clean the filter
Drain hose installed wrong (too deep in the standpipe or too high) Occasional Yes — re-route per manual
Weak drain pump Less common No — technician job

What you can try yourself

  1. Cancel the cycle and check the drain hose behind the washer — if it's kinked or pinched, straighten it and retry.
  2. Confirm the drain hose lands in the standpipe the way your Use & Care Guide shows, and isn't pushed in too far.
  3. Turn off and unplug the washer, open the lower access panel and clean the drain pump filter, catching water with towels and a shallow pan.
  4. Run water directly into the standpipe to confirm the house drain is clear — if it's slow, that's a plumbing issue, not the washer.
  5. If draining is still slow after cleaning, the pump or its electronics need a technician's test.

When to call a technician

Typical professional repair cost: $0–$100 for the DIY fixes; a professional drain-pump replacement runs $200–$350

Frequently asked questions

Will E21 clear on its own?

Sometimes, if a kink straightens or a loose item washes free. But clean the pump filter and check the hose first — those cause most E21 cases.

Is a clogged filter the most likely cause?

Very common — coins, lint and small items collect there, and cleaning it is the first thing most technicians do.

What if water drains fine when I check the standpipe?

Then the restriction is inside the washer — usually the pump filter or pump itself, and a technician may be needed.
