Samsung Washer 5C — What It Means & How to Fix It

Also shown as 5E, SC on some models.

The washer can't drain — nine times out of ten the culprit is a clogged debris filter or a blocked drain hose, both of which you can clear yourself.

What this code means

5C (5E on older models) means the washer tried to pump water out but the water level didn't drop in time. Drain problems almost always come down to an obstruction: lint, coins, or a sock caught in the debris filter, or a drain hose that's kinked, clogged, or pushed too far into the standpipe.

This drain code is standard across Samsung front- and top-load washers. If you're unsure, your model number sticker is inside the door rim or on the back panel — Samsung's support site lists the manual for each model.

Most likely causes

CauseHow likelyDIY-fixable?
Debris filter clogged with lint, coins, or small items Very common Yes — towel + shallow tray
Drain hose kinked, crushed, or blocked Common Yes — no tools
Drain hose inserted too deep into the standpipe (siphoning/blockage) Occasional Yes — reposition hose
Drain pump failed or jammed Less common No — technician job

What you can try yourself

  1. Unplug the washer first. There will be standing water, so gather towels and a shallow pan.
  2. Open the small access panel at the bottom front. Most Samsung front-loaders have an emergency drain tube there — uncap it and let the water run into your pan before opening the filter.
  3. Unscrew the debris filter (counterclockwise) and pull it out. Remove lint, coins, hairpins — anything trapped — rinse the filter under a tap, and check the opening with a flashlight for objects stuck behind it.
  4. Screw the filter back in firmly, then check the drain hose behind the machine: straighten any kinks and make sure no more than about 6 inches (15 cm) sits inside the standpipe.
  5. Plug back in and run a Rinse+Spin cycle to confirm it drains.

When to call a technician

Typical professional repair cost: A drain pump replacement is typically $150–$300 parts and labor on Samsung washers.

Frequently asked questions

How do I get the water out before opening the debris filter?

Use the thin emergency drain hose behind the same access panel — uncap it over a shallow tray and let it empty slowly. It takes a few minutes but avoids a flood.

How often should the debris filter be cleaned?

Samsung recommends about once a month, or more often if you wash pet bedding or lint-heavy loads. Most people never clean it until a 5C appears.

Is 5C the same as SC or 5E?

Yes — 5E is the older display version and SC appears on some models. All three indicate the same drain failure.

Can a clogged household drain cause 5C?

It can. If the washer drains into a standpipe that's backing up, the water has nowhere to go. If the standpipe gurgles or overflows during drain, the blockage is in your plumbing, not the washer.
