Whirlpool Washer F0 E5 — What It Means & How to Fix It

Also shown as F0E5 on some models.

By Callum Griffin · Researched and verified against manufacturer and repair documentation · Reviewed September 2026

F0E5 means the load is off balance or too large, so the washer spun slowly or not at all — rearrange or reduce the load and run a Drain & Spin cycle.

What this code means

Whirlpool describes F0E5 as an off-balance load. On front-load washers it explains that a sizable unbalanced load forces reduced spin speeds, leaving clothes wetter and the cycle longer; on top-load washers it says the load is unbalanced or too large. If the clothes are not dripping, Whirlpool says the cycle simply took longer to balance and no action is needed.

Covered in both Whirlpool's front-load and top-load washer help with the same off-balance meaning. Some top-load displays show OFb for the same condition.

Most likely causes

CauseHow likelyDIY-fixable?
Single bulky item washed alone (rug, jacket, comforter) Very common Yes — no tools
Washer overloaded or tightly packed Common Yes — no tools
Load bunched to one side of the drum or basket Common Yes — no tools
Washer not level, or a suspension fault Less common Partly — level the feet

What you can try yourself

  1. If the load is not dripping wet, do nothing — the cycle finished, it just took longer to balance.
  2. If it is dripping, pause or cancel the cycle and open the door or lid once it unlocks.
  3. Remove a few items if the washer is packed tight; clothes should move freely.
  4. If you washed one bulky item, add a few garments or towels to balance it.
  5. Spread the load evenly and run a Drain & Spin cycle to finish removing the water.

When to call a technician

Typical professional repair cost: Free in most cases. Suspension or shock repairs, if the washer cannot balance any load, usually cost $150–$300.

Frequently asked questions

Why are my clothes soaking wet after F0E5?

Whirlpool explains that an unbalanced load can result in reduced spin speeds, which remove less water. Rebalance the load and run Drain & Spin.

Is F0E5 a fault with the washer?

Usually not. It reports how the load behaved. Whirlpool says no action is needed if the load is not dripping wet.

Can I wash a single rug or jacket?

Whirlpool advises against washing single bulky items by themselves. Balance one with a few extra garments.
