Whirlpool Washer LdL — What It Means & How to Fix It
Also shown as dL on some models.
LdL — dL on some displays — means the lid is not locking: remove anything trapped under the lid and clean detergent build-up from around the lid lock.
What this code means
Whirlpool explains LdL as lid lock will not lock, or lid lock failure. An item in the load may be keeping the lid from locking, or detergent may have built up around the lock mechanism. If the code appears again after those checks, Whirlpool says to schedule service.
A Whirlpool top-load code. Whirlpool gives dL the same explanation. Washers with F#E# displays report lid lock trouble as F5E2.
Most likely causes
| Cause | How likely | DIY-fixable? |
|---|---|---|
| Clothing or another item caught directly under the lid | Very common | Yes — no tools |
| Detergent build-up around the lid lock | Common | Yes — damp cloth |
| Lid lock mechanism has failed | Occasional | No — technician job |
What you can try yourself
- Open the lid and push the load down below the rim of the basket.
- Look at the lock opening in the washer top and the strike on the lid for anything in the way.
- Wipe dried detergent from both with a damp cloth.
- Close the lid and press Start.
- If LdL appears again, schedule service.
Seeing the symptom rather than the code? Washer door or lid trouble: checks that apply across brands.
When to call a technician
- LdL repeats with a clean lock and nothing under the lid.
- The lid strike is bent or broken.
- The lock clicks repeatedly but never engages.
Typical professional repair cost: A lid lock replacement typically costs $120–$220 with labor.
Frequently asked questions
What does LdL mean on a Whirlpool washer?
Lid lock will not lock, or lid lock failure — the lid is not locking.
Is dL the same as LdL?
Whirlpool describes both the same way: the lid is not locking, possibly because of an item under the lid or detergent build-up at the lock.
Can I bypass the lid lock?
No. The lock keeps the lid shut while the basket spins, and this site does not publish bypasses. Clean it, and have it replaced if it has failed.
