Amana Washer LdU — What It Means & How to Fix It

Also shown as dU, DU on some models.

By Callum Griffin · Researched and verified against manufacturer and repair documentation · Reviewed September 2026

The lid won't unlock — LdU tells you the washer can't release the lid, often because something is sitting on top of it.

What this code means

LdU is Amana's display form for the door-unlock fault (dU on sibling Whirlpool-family models). After the cycle the lid should release; if it can't, Amana says the most common cause is weight on top of the washer — like a laundry basket — pressing the lid down and keeping it from unlocking. The washer normally retries the unlock, so remove anything from the top and give it a moment.

LdU comes straight from Amana's official top-load error-code table; the Whirlpool-family platform shows the equivalent dU on models sharing the same lid-lock hardware. Confirm your model's display form in its manual.

Most likely causes

CauseHow likelyDIY-fixable?
Weight on top of the washer holding the lid down Very common Yes — remove the objects
Lid-lock assembly sticking after many cycles Common No — technician recommended
Electrical glitch in the lock circuit Occasional Yes — unplug 5 minutes, retry
Wiring issue in the lock harness Less common No — technician recommended

What you can try yourself

  1. Remove everything from the top of the washer — baskets, boxes — that could press down on the lid.
  2. Wait a minute after the cycle ends; the washer retries the unlock on its own.
  3. If it still won't release, unplug the washer for five minutes, plug it back in, and run a drain/spin cycle.
  4. With the washer unplugged, gently work the lid up and down a few times to free a sticky latch.
  5. If LdU repeats, have the lid-lock assembly checked — forcing the lid can break the latch.

When to call a technician

Typical professional repair cost: $120–$250 for lid-lock assembly replacement including labor

Frequently asked questions

My clothes are stuck inside — what do I do?

Remove anything sitting on the washer lid first — that's the most common cause. If it still won't unlock after a five-minute unplug, call a technician; forcing the lid can break the latch.

Is LdU and LdL the same problem?

They're two sides of the same lid-lock hardware: LdL means it can't lock and LdU means it can't unlock. Both start with simple checks and can end at the same latch replacement.
