Samsung Washer SUD — What It Means & How to Fix It
Also shown as 5D, Sd on some models.
The washer detected too much foam and paused to let the suds break down — almost always caused by too much detergent or the wrong (non-HE) type.
What this code means
SUD (shown as 5D or Sd on some displays) means the suds sensor found enough foam to interfere with washing or draining. The machine isn't broken: it pauses, often adds water to dissolve the foam, and resumes on its own. The message is essentially 'use less soap.'
SUD/5D is consistent across Samsung front-loaders. High-efficiency machines use far less water than old top-loaders, which is why regular detergent doses oversuds them so easily.
Most likely causes
| Cause | How likely | DIY-fixable? |
|---|---|---|
| Too much detergent for the load size | Very common | Yes — use less |
| Regular (non-HE) detergent in a high-efficiency washer | Very common | Yes — switch to HE |
| Detergent buildup in the drum or dispenser from past overdosing | Common | Yes — cleaning cycle |
| Partially clogged drain slowing suds clearance | Occasional | Yes — clean debris filter |
What you can try yourself
- Do nothing at first — the washer typically waits for the foam to collapse and then continues the cycle by itself. This can take 10–20 minutes.
- When the cycle ends, run a Rinse+Spin with no detergent to flush remaining residue.
- Check your detergent: it should carry the 'HE' logo. With HE detergent, two teaspoons is genuinely enough for a normal load — the cap lines on most bottles are generous.
- Run your machine's Self Clean / Pure Cycle (or a hot empty wash) monthly to strip built-up residue that makes future oversudsing more likely.
- If SUD pairs with slow draining, clean the debris filter behind the bottom-front access panel — foam clears slower through a restricted drain.
When to call a technician
- SUD appears even with tiny amounts of HE detergent or with none at all — a suds/pressure sensor fault is possible.
- The code consistently appears together with a 5C drain error, suggesting the real problem is drainage.
- Foam visibly leaks from the door seal or dispenser on every wash regardless of dosing.
Typical professional repair cost: Rarely needs a repair at all. If a pressure/suds sensor has failed, expect $120–$220 including labor.
Frequently asked questions
Is the SUD code harmful to my Samsung washer?
An occasional SUD is harmless — the machine protects itself. Chronic oversudsing, though, leaves residue that can foul sensors and bearings over time, so it's worth fixing your dosing.
Why does my washer show SUD with hardly any detergent?
Residue from months of overdosing keeps generating foam even with small doses. Run two or three hot Self Clean cycles to strip it. Very soft water also amplifies suds, so soft-water households should dose at the low end.
Can I just cancel the cycle when SUD appears?
It's better to wait — the washer adds water and rinses the foam down. Cancelling leaves suds in the tub, and the next cycle will likely hit the same wall.
