Traeger Pellet Grill Er2 — What It Means & How to Fix It

By Callum Griffin · Researched and verified against manufacturer and repair documentation · Reviewed September 2026

Er2 on a non-WiFi Traeger means the RTD temperature probe itself has failed and needs replacing.

What this code means

Where Er1 points at the connection, Er2 points at the sensor. Traeger's article says an Er2 message indicates the RTD probe has failed, and its only instruction is to replace the RTD after confirming with Customer Support. There is no reset that brings a dead probe back.

Traeger documents Er2 for pellet grills without WiFi connectivity only. On a WiFIRE grill, look up the message shown on that controller instead.

What you can try yourself

  1. Turn the grill off and unplug it.
  2. Find the serial number label on the grill and note the model and serial number.
  3. Contact Traeger Customer Support so they can confirm the diagnosis and send the right RTD for your model.

When to call a technician

Typical professional repair cost: A replacement RTD probe, supplied by Traeger. Ask support whether your grill is still inside its warranty before paying for the part.

Frequently asked questions

Can I cook on my Traeger with an Er2 showing?

No. The controller has no temperature reading to work from, so it will not run. The probe has to be replaced first.

What is the difference between Er1 and Er2 on a Traeger?

Er1 is a connection problem between the RTD probe and the controller. Er2 means the probe has failed outright.
