Traeger Pellet Grill LEr — What It Means & How to Fix It
LEr (Low Error Reading) means a non-WiFIRE Traeger dropped below 125°F for more than 10 minutes, so the fire is out and the grill has shut itself down.
What this code means
When the temperature stays under 125°F/52°C for over ten minutes the controller flashes LEr and stops the auger, the induction fan and the ignitor. It is the grill telling you the fire died, not that a part has failed. Traeger says the code should clear after a power cycle, and that one which keeps coming back points to something else being wrong.
Traeger's support article describes LEr as specific to non-WiFIRE grills with 3-digit digital controllers. WiFIRE grills with a touchscreen or colour display report a low-temperature shutdown differently, so use the article for your controller type.
Most likely causes
| Cause | How likely | DIY-fixable? |
|---|---|---|
| Firepot crowded with ash, sawdust or unburned pellets | Very common | Yes — vacuum the firepot |
| Old or damp pellets that will not light properly | Common | Yes — swap the pellets |
| No pellets reaching the firepot (tunnelling in the hopper, or an unprimed auger on a new grill) | Common | Yes — no tools |
| Cold or windy weather pulling heat out of a small grill | Occasional | Yes — move the grill |
| Failed induction fan, RTD or hot rod | Less common | No — contact Traeger |
What you can try yourself
- Turn the grill off, unplug it and let it cool completely before touching anything inside.
- Lift out the grates, drip tray and heat baffle, then vacuum the ash and any leftover pellets out of the firepot.
- Look in the hopper: stir pellets that have tunnelled around the auger, and replace any that are soft, swollen or crumbly.
- Check the chimney (if your grill has one) for buildup that would choke the airflow.
- Reassemble, plug in and start the grill following the startup procedure for your model.
- On a windy or very cold day, move the grill somewhere sheltered before the next cook.
When to call a technician
- LEr comes back on a clean grill with fresh, dry pellets.
- The fan never spins or the firepot never gets hot at startup.
- The displayed temperature jumps around instead of climbing steadily.
Typical professional repair cost: Usually free — cleaning and fresh pellets fix most LEr shutdowns. If a fan, RTD or hot rod has failed, Traeger support supplies the part, at no charge while the grill is under warranty.
Frequently asked questions
Why does my Traeger say LEr in the middle of a cook?
The fire went out and the grill sat below 125°F for more than ten minutes. The usual reasons are an ash-choked firepot, damp pellets or pellets that stopped feeding.
Can I just restart the grill after an LEr?
Clean out the firepot first. Traeger notes that restarting on top of the unburned pellets left behind by an LEr can make them all ignite at once and trip the high-temperature HEr code.
